Former Inter owner Massimo Moratti recently revealed fascinating details about several high-profile transfer attempts during his tenure at the club. In an interview with Corriere della Sera marking the 30th anniversary of his takeover, Moratti shared stories about pursuing football legends and discovering talents.
Discussing Inter’s recent 1-0 loss to Juventus, Moratti expressed concern about the pressure placed on captain Lautaro Martinez. “Too many wasted chances and excessive pressure on poor Lautaro. But I have great affection for Motta and all the treble winners – they’re like additional children to me,” he stated.
The Discovery of Zanetti and Pursuit of Barcelona Stars
The story of Javier Zanetti’s signing is particularly intriguing. While scouting Ariel Ortega in Argentine league footage, Moratti noticed Zanetti’s potential. After careful consideration and multiple video reviews with his children, he dispatched scouts to Argentina and ultimately secured the signing that would shape Inter’s future.
Moratti revealed ambitious attempts to sign Andres Iniesta from Barcelona during Inter’s peak financial period. “We approached Barcelona through multiple channels – diplomatic routes, mediators, personal visits. They would have sold anyone except Iniesta. Even an astronomical offer wouldn’t have changed their stance,” he explained.
The former Inter president also disclosed their interest in a young Lionel Messi, whom they scouted during the U18 World Cup. However, Barcelona’s commitment to supporting Messi’s health needs ultimately led Moratti to step back from the pursuit.
The Ronaldo Saga and Totti Revelation
Recounting Ronaldo’s signing in 1997, Moratti described endless phone conversations and the Brazilian star’s indecision. “He would constantly switch between ‘yes, I’ll sign’ and ‘no, I need to think about it,'” Moratti remembered.
Perhaps the most surprising revelation was regarding Francesco Totti. According to Moratti, Roma’s financially troubled management actually offered them the chance to sign their iconic captain. “The President was desperate, in tears even,” Moratti revealed. “But we decided to respect the sentimental aspect of football and didn’t pursue it.”
These revelations offer a fascinating glimpse into the complexities of football transfers and the human elements that influence major decisions in the sport. While some attempts proved unsuccessful, they demonstrate Inter’s ambitious vision under Moratti’s leadership.
